Religious Studies A Level

Entry Requirements: 5 5 (English Language/Literature)

The course is divided into three main components:

  1. Philosophy - Starting with the influence of Plato and Aristotle, pupils are guided through attributes of God and questions of existence, focusing on the problem of evil and how language is used to express philosophical and religious concepts. 
  2. Ethics - Pupils study deontological, teleological, and character-based approaches, such as Natural Law, Utilitarianism, Kantian Ethics, and Virtue Ethics. These are then applied to contemporary issues like euthanasia, business ethics, sexual ethics, and meta-ethics.
  3. Developments in Religious Thought - Pupils study the theological approaches and responses of one major world religion, exploring historical and social developments as well as how religion interacts with contemporary societal issues and interfaith dialogue.

Career paths for Religious Studies Alumni:

Philosophy/RS complements subjects like History, English, Sociology, Psychology and Politics by providing additional perspectives and deepening understanding. The subject helps improve essay-writing skills, which are valuable across many humanities subjects. We prepare our students for a range of careers such as education, law, social work, journalism, politics, international relations, and more.
